Before we learn how to do things in WordPress, I think you should know the people behind WordPress. Do you know who created WordPress? Have you ever wondered? Fear not, as we are going to introduce them to you.
So who are the Top Dogs of WordPress?
They’re Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. They started WordPress in 2003 initially to fork b2/cafelog. Back then, b2/cafelog was used by around 2,000 blogs as of May 2003. Everything was written using PHP to use with MySQL by Michel Valdrighi, currently one of the contributing developers of WordPress.
For a list of lead developers, check out this page. That page also lists the contributors, i.e., those in the WordPress community who also contribute to improve the WordPress platform. This has been the practice since the beginning since WordPress is open-source project.
What’s interesting is that you don’t have to write code to contribute. In fact, Hans Engel introduces himself as “WordPress documenter, developer, and tester.” Note that he mentions documentation as his first role. Although he is fluent in PHP, you don’t really need that skill to document or test software.
So these are the good folks who make possible more than half of the world’s top million sites on the Web. But no matter how you rank on the Web, you owe Mullenweg and Little a debt of gratitude.
So let’s all put our hands (paws?) together and whoop it up for WordPress.
